Auf der Brücke der Infinity  (English text s. below).

Südamerika-Kreuzfahrt 2017 mit der “Infinity”. – Heute dürfen wir die Brücke der Infinity besuchen, eine absolute Ausnahme. Die Kommandobrücke, kurz “Brücke” genannt, besteht aus dem Steuerhaus des Schiffs und jeweils einem Brückennock, d.h. einem Vorbau auf jeder Seite. Von der Brücke aus wird das Schiff von den nautischen Offizieren navigiert.

Kapitän Nikolaos Frantzis begrüßt unsere Gruppe. “Wie Sie sehen, haben wir zur Zeit Nebel. Aber mit unseren Instrumenten haben wir natürlich trotzdem Sicht”, erklärt er und weist auf die Bildschirme hin. “Jetzt ist es relativ ruhig, aber Kap Hoorn hat uns gut durchgeschüttelt. Dort hatten wir Windstärken von 10 bis 12 auf der Beaufort-Skala, und bis zu 9 m hohe Wellen.”

Auf der Brücke haben immer mindestens drei Offiziere Wache, bei Manövern sind bis zu neun Crew-Mitgliedern im Einsatz. Die Wachen wechseln sich alle acht Stunden ab.

Wir besichtigen die nautischen Instrumente zum Manövrieren des Schiffs: Kommunikationseinrichtungen, elektronische Seekarten, Kompass, Radarbildschirm, etc. Das meiste eingebaut in drei Arbeitsreihen im Zentrum. Zusätzlich befindet sich auf beiden Brückennocks jeweils ein vollständiger Kommandotisch, der zum Manövrieren beim An- und Ablegen benutzt wird.

Und dann sehen wir tatsächlich noch einen Kartentisch, an dem ein Offizier mit Papier-Seekarte, Winkelmesser, Zirkel und Stift arbeitet. “Natürlich haben wir alles auch elektronisch und viel genauer”, erklärt er uns, “das hier zeichnen wir nur parallel auf.”

Auf unserer zweiwöchigen Kreuzfahrt von Buenos Aires (Argentinien) nach Valparaíso (Chile) legen wir insgesamt 4.157 Seemeilen zurück, also 7.699 km.

Was das wohl an Treibstoff kostet? “Wenn die Kreuzfahrt zu Ende ist, haben wir für den Treibstoff rund 700.000 US-Dollar ausgegeben”, sagt uns einer der Offiziere auf der Brücke. Da kann unser eigenes Boot nicht mithalten – glücklicherweise!

Einige Hintergrundinformationen zur Infinity:

Die Infinity gehört der Kreuzfahrtlinie Celebrity Cruises an. Diese wurde 1989 von der griechischen Reederei Chandris gegründet und gehört seit 1997 zur amerikanischen Kreuzfahrtgesellschaft Royal Caribbean Cruises. Die griechische Herkunft merkt man noch am Logo: Alle Schiffe der Celebrity-Linie tragen das Logo X, das für den griechischen Buchstaben “Chi” für Chandris steht.

Die Infinity ist ein Kreuzfahrtschiff der mittleren Größe. Sie hat 12 Decks und bietet Platz für 2.070 Passagiere und 999 Besatzungsmitglieder. Das Schiff wurde von einer französischen Werft gebaut, der Bau kostete damals 350 Millionen US-Dollar. 2001 wurde die Infinity zu Wasser gelassen, 2011 generalüberholt und modernisiert.

Die Infinity wiegt 91.000 Bruttoregistertonnen, ist 294 m lang  und 32 m breit und hat einen Tiefgang von 8 m. Ihre Maschinenleistung ist 53.000 PS. Ihre Höchstgeschwindigkeit beträgt 24 Knoten pro Stunde, also 44 Stundenkilometer. Meist fährt die Infinity aber mit 17 Knoten, also 31 Stundenkilometern, weil dies am kosteneffektivsten ist.

South America cruise 2017 on board of the “Infinity”. – Today we are allowed to visit the bridge of the Infinity, which is an absolute exception. The navigational bridge, shortly called “bridge”, consists of the pilothouse and a bridge wing on both sides of the ship. It is from the bridge that the ship is navigated by the nautical officers.

Captain Nikolaos Frantzis welcomes our group. “As you can see we’ve got fog at the present. But of course, we have good visibility due to our instruments”, he explains pointing to the monitors. “Right now, it’s comparatively calm but Cape Horn shook us quite a bit. There we had forces from 10 to 12 on the Beaufort scale, and high waves up to 30 feet.”

On the bridge, there are always three officers at least who are on watch, and up to nine crew members during maneuvers. The watches change every eight hours.

We have a look at the nautical instruments which are necessary for maneuvering the ship: communications appliances, electronic charts, compass, radar screen, etc. Most of it installed in three desk rows in the center. Additionally, there is a fully operating desk on each bridge wing used for maneuvering during docking.

And then we notice a chart table where an officer is actually working with a paper chart, goniometer, dividers and pen. “Of course, we’ve also got everything electronically and more exact”, he tells us, “this is just additional drawing.”

During our two weeks cruise from Buenos Aires (Argentina) to Valparaíso (Chile), we’ll cover 4,157 nautical miles altogether, i.e. 4,784 miles.

How much do they have to pay for fuel? “When the cruise is finished, we will have paid approximately 700,000 US dollar”, one of the officers on the bridge tells us. Well, our own boat can’t keep up with this – fortunately!

Some background information on the Infinity:

The Infinity is owned and operated by Celebrity Cruises. The cruising line was founded in 1989 by the Greek shipping company Chandris. In 1997, it was integrated into the American cruising company Royal Carribbean Cruises. The logo still refers to the Greek origin, all ships of the Celebrity line bear the logo X which stands for the Greek letter “chi” for Chandris.

The Infinity is a cruise ship of medium size. She has 12 decks and can accomodate up to 2,070 passengers and 999 crew members. The ship was built by a French shipbuilder, her construction cost 350 million US dollar at that time. She was launched in 2001 and given a complete overhaul in 2011.

The Infinity has a tonnage of 91,000 GT. Her length is 964 feet, her beam 105 feet wide, her draft 26 feet. Her engines have an output of 53,000 bhp. Her maximum speed is 24 knots, i.e. 28 miles per hour. Most of the times, however, the Infinity sails at 17 knots, i.e. 20 miles per hour as this is most cost-effective.
