Südamerika-Kreuzfahrt 2017, Argentinien. – Als wir morgens vom Schiff schauen, sehen wir Ushuaia vor uns liegen. Die Hauptstadt der argentinischen Provinz Feuerland ist die südlichste Stadt des amerikanischen Kontinents. “Die letzte Stadt der Welt”, wie sie sich selber nennt.
Das stimmt wirklich. Denn Ushuaia ist für Schiffe und Flugzeuge die allerletzte Versorgungsstation, bevor es zur Antarktis geht. Wir haben jetzt Polarsommer, es ist viel los. Am Kai liegen Forschungsschiffe und Eisbrecher und bunkern Vorräte. Auf der Hauptstraße des Ortes fallen die vielen Läden mit wetterfester Outdoor-Kleidung auf – und überproportional viele Banken und Friseurgeschäfte.
“Antártida Argentina” steht auf einem Straßenschild. Die argentinische Antarktis ist nur 650 Seemeilen (1.200 km) enfernt.

Last Town of the World.
South America cruise 2017, Argentina. – Looking from our ship in the morning, we see Ushuaia in front of us. The capital of the Argentinian province Tierra del Fuego ist the most Southern town of the American continent. “The last town of the world” as the city proclaims.
This is really true. For Ushuaia is the very last supply base for ships and airplanes before their departure to Antarctica. Right now we have arctic summer, it’s pretty busy here. Research vessels and icebreakers are docked at the quay taking on supplies. You see many shops in Ushuaia’s main street selling weatherproof outdoor clothing – and disproportinately many banks and hairdressers.
We also notice the street sign “Antártida Argentina”. The Argentian Antarctic is only 650 nautical miles (750 miles) away from here.
