Zwischenspiel in Uruguay – Interlude in Uruguay

Zwischenspiel in Uruguay

Montevideo, Uruguay.

Interlude in Uruguay

Montevideo, Uruguay.

If you could only show one photo of Montevideo, it should be this one: the central square of the town, the “Plaza Independencia”, with the Palacio Salvo. The building is the absolute landmark of the Uruguayan capital.

We’ve just arrived from Buenos Aires plannning to stay at Montevideo for a week. Our first walk leads us to Plaza Independencia.

Palacio Salvo (center of the photo), named after his owners, was opened in 1928. The 344-foot edifice used to be the highest building in South America for many years. It houses apartments, condos and businesses. The Art Decó style is typical for Montevideo.

The 56-foot equestrian statue on the square (left in the photo) shows national hero José Artigas, who is considered “the father of Uruguayan nationhood”. The Artigas mausoleum is underground beneath his statue.

The small white building (right below) is the “Torre Ejecutiva”, the seat of the Uruguayan president.
