Kein Kunstwerk – ein echtes Wrack. Betrachtet man das Gras, erhält man den Eindruck, das abgebrannte Auto steht schon lange dort. Anscheinend macht selbst die Straßenreinigung einen Bogen um das Wrack.
Wir sind in Villa Lugano, einem Bezirk mit 120.000 Einwohnern am Stadtrand von Buenos Aires (“villa” bedeutet “Stadt”). Es gibt zwar noch den idyllischen Ortskern von früher, aber große Teile des Bezirks sind heute soziale Brennpunkte. Hier befinden sich die größten Slums (“villas miserias”) von Buenos Aires. Darunter auch “der weiße Elefant”, die Ruine eines Hochhauses, das ursprünglich als größtes Krankenhaus Lateinamerikas geplant war und nie zu Ende gebaut wurde. In diesem Elendsviertel spielt auch der preisgekrönte Spielfilm “Die verborgene Stadt” (Originaltitel “Elefante blanco”) von 2012 – ein sehr bewegender Film, der einen einzigartigen Einblick in das Leben der Slums gewährt.

Burnt Down
Not a work of art, but a real wreck. Looking at the grass you get the impression that the burnt-down car has been left standing there for a long time. Apparently, even the metropolitan street cleaning service steers clear of the wreck.
We are in Villa Lugano, a district of 120,000 inhabitants on the outskirts of Buenos Aires (“villa” means “town”). The neighbourhood still has the idyllic center of former times but large parts of the district are social problem zones. Villa Lugano has the largest slums (“villas miserias”) of Buenos Aires. Including the “white elephant”, the ruin of a high-rise which was originally planned as the biggest hospital of Latin America but has never been completed. This area is also the setting of the award-winning movie “White Elephant” (“Elefante blanco”) of 2012 – a deeply moving film which gives you a unique insight into life in the slums.
