Nur 20 Minuten zu Fuß, aber in einer anderen Welt. In Foz do Iguaçu (Brasilien) überquert man den Fluss Paraná und ist in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay. Riesige Reklameschilder, unzählige Marktstände auf ungepflasterten, staubigen Wegen, enge Gassen mit Basaren. Und direkt daneben erstrecken sich die Hochhäuser der Luxus-Warenhäuser, bewacht von Sicherheitspersonal.

Jeden Tag wälzen sich Kolonnen von Autos und Bussen mit Brasilianern und Argentiniern nach Ciudad del Este. Die zweitgrößte Stadt Paraguays (330.000 Einwohner) ist das absolute Handelszentrum im Dreiländereck Paraguay, Brasilien und Argentinien. Sie hieß früher “Puerto Presidente Stroessner” und erhielt nach dessen Sturz ihren heutigen Namen “Stadt des Ostens”.

Man sagt, nur ein kleiner Teil des Handels ist hier legal. In den Luxus-Warenhäusern ist die Rolex in US-Dollars ausgeschildert und kostet so viel wie in Paris – draußen in den Bazaren kostet die Fälschung nur wenige paraguayische Guaraní.

Ciudad del Este ist nicht Paraguay. Es ist nur ein kleiner Punkt auf der Landkarte eines Landes, das politisch schwere Zeiten hinter sich hat und zu den ärmsten Ländern Südamerikas zählt.

Detour to Paraguay

Only 20 minutes on foot but in a different world. You cross the River Paraná in Foz do Iguaçu (Brazil) and are in Ciudad del Este, Paraguay. Huge advertising boards, countless market stalls in unpaved, dusty streets, narrow lanes with bazaars. And directly next to them you find the high-rises with luxury department stores, watched over by security.

A stream of cars and buses with Brazilian and Argentinian customers flows to Ciudad del Este every day. The second-largest city of Paraguay (330,000 inhabitants) is the trade center in the triangle of Paraguay, Brazil and Argentina. Formerly called “Puerto Presidente Stroessner” it changed its name to “City of the East” after his downfall.

Allegedly, only a small part of the trade here is legal. In the luxury department stores, the Rolex watch is priced in US dollars and costs as much as in Paris – in the bazaars outside the fake only costs a few Paraguayan Guaranís.

Ciudad del Este is not Paraguay. It’s only a dot on the map of a country which has suffered from many political problems and is one of the poorest countries of South America.
