Rio, Brasilien. – Weit öffnet der Christus die Arme, 28 m weit. Die weltberühmte Statue des “Cristo Redentor” (Christus des Erlösers) steht auf dem Berg Corcovado und blickt über Rios Stadtzentrum zum Zuckerhut. Die 30 m hohe Statue ist aus Stahlbeton, mit Speckstein überzogen. Ihre Bauzeit dauerte neun Jahre, 1931 wurde sie eingeweiht.
Immer wieder wurde die Statue durch Unwetter beschädigt, zuletzt 2014, als sie einen Teil des rechten Mittelfingers durch Blitzeinschlag verlor. Es war jedoch kein Problem, den Finger zu reparieren. Denn in der Statue führt eine Treppe in den Kopf und oben ein waagerechter Gang in beide Hände. Auf dem Kopf und in der rechten Schulter befindet sich eine Luke, durch die die Wartungstechniker hinausklettern und die Statue von außen reparieren können.
The 92 Feet Embrace.
Rio, Brazil. – Christ opens his arms wide, a 92 ft embrace. The world famous statue of “Cristo Redentor” (Christ the Redeemer) stands on Mount Corcovado and overlooks the City of Rio to the Sugar Loaf. The 30 m high statue is made of reinforced concrete, covered with soapstone. It took nine years to build and was inaugurated in 1931.
The statue was repeatedly damaged by storms, most recently in 2014, when it lost part of its right middle finger to lightning. However, it was no problem to repair the finger. For the statue has a staircase inside which climbs up to the head as well as a horizontal corridor leading to both hands. On the head and in the right shoulder there’s a hatch through which the maintenance technicians can climb out and repair the statue from the outside.
