Polo und Pato (English text s. below)

“Bienvenidos en La Catedral de Polo”, “Willkommen in der Kathedrale des Polo”, begrüßt uns der Pressesprecher der Argentinischen Polo-Vereinigung. Wir nehmen an einer Gruppe teil, die das Polo-Stadion im Stadtteil Palermo in Buenos Aires besichtigt.
Der “Campo Argentino de Polo” wird wirklich “Kathedrale” genannt. So denken Argentinier über Polo: Er ist ein nationales Heiligtum, genauso wie der Fußball. Das Gelände des Campo umfasst zwei riesige Felder.
In Argentinien spielt man das beste Polo der Welt, das Land dominiert den Sport seit über 70 Jahren. Die Meisterschaftskämpfe finden von September bis Mitte November statt. Höhepunkt ist die jährliche “Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo” (Argentine Open Polo Championship). Der weltbeste Polospieler ist Adolfo Cambiaso, natürlich auch Argentinier.
An dem Tag, an dem wir den Campus besichtigen, finden gerade die Pato-Meisterschaftskämpfe statt.
Was ist “Pato”? Das Wort leitet sich von dem spanischen Wort für “Ente” ab. Pato war ursprünglich ein Gaucho-Sport. Die berittenen Gauchos spielten früher mit einer lebenden Ente, die in einem Lederbeutel eingepackt war. Heute ist das natürlich anders. Jetzt wird ein Ball verwendet, der Griffe hat, damit die Spieler ihn während des Reitens vom Boden aufgreifen können.
Die nationalen Meisterschaftskämpfe der “Federación Argentina de Pato y Horseball” werden jedes Jahr im Dezember ausgetragen.

“Bienvenidos en La Catedral de Polo”, “Welcome to the Cathedral of Polo”, the press officer of the Argentinian Polo Association tells us. We’ve joined a group visiting the polo stadium in Buenos Aires’ neighbourhood Palermo.
The “Campo Argentino de Polo” is really called “Cathedral”. This is what Argentinians consider polo to be: a national holy shrine, similar to soccer. The stadium includes two huge fields.
Argentina plays the best polo of the world, dominating the sport for more than 70 years. The polo championships are usually from September to mid-November. The highlight is the annual “Campeonato Argentino Abierto de Polo”, the “Argentine Open Polo Championship”. The best polo player of the world is Adolfo Cambiaso, of course, he is Argentinian.
On the day of our tour, we have the opportunity of watching the Pato Championships.
What exactly is “pato”? The word derives from the Spanish word for “duck”. Pato was originally a gaucho sport. In former times, the gauchos on horseback played the sport with a living duck which was encased in a leather bag. Of course, this has changed today. The players now use a ball which has handles so that they can pick it up from the ground while riding.
The national championships of the “Federación Argentina de Pato y Horseball” are held every year in December.
