Rettung in der Antarktis – vor 113 Jahren. Die alte Korvette “Uruguay”, die heute als Museumsschiff im Hafen Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires liegt, hat Erstaunliches geleistet.
Die Korvette wurde 1874 in England gebaut und von 1877 bis 1880 als Schulschiff eingesetzt. Von 1903 bis 1922 versorgte sie die Stationen der argentinischen Antarktis mit Nachschub. 1903 geriet das Expeditionsteam des schwedischen Forschers Otto Nordenskjöld in der Antarktis in Gefahr. Das Schiff, das sie wieder abholen sollte, blieb im Packeis stecken und sank. Das Expeditionsteam konnte sich auf eine Insel in Sicherheit bringen und wurde von der “Uruguay” gerettet.
Morgen gehen wir an Bord eines Kreuzfahrtschiffs Richtung Kap Hoorn – das Kap ist nur 600 Seemeilen von der Antarktis entfernt.

Rescue in Antarctic

Rescue in the Antarctic – 113 years ago. The old corvette “Uruguay”, which is now docket in Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires, did a remarkable job.
The corvette was built in England in 1874 und served as a training ship from 1877 to 1880. She provided the camps in the Argentinian Antarctic with supplies. In 1903 the expedition crew of the Swedish explorer Otto Nordenskjöld got into a life-threatening situation. The ship which was supposed to pick them up got caught in the pack ice and sank. The expedition crew was able to reach an island where they were rescued by the “Uruguay”.
Tomorrow we are boarding a cruise ship sailing to Cape Horn – which is only 600 nautical miles away from the Antarctic.
